Subframes Explained

The subframe of a decking area is one of the most important parts of having a deck installed. Whilst the subframe is generally hidden, it is crucial for the deck’s longevity. A poor subframe choice or install can lead to the decking being damaged or can even lead to the decking becoming structurally dangerous and eventually failure.

Plas-Pro

By using selected graded materials and cleverly engineered processes, Plas-Pro recycled plastic posts and solid plastic joists provide a sound framework as well as environmental benefits. Naturally moisture resistant and low maintenance, plastic lumber solutions ensure the long life of your decking project, especially compared to timber joists. Plas-Pro can be used on both solid surfaces and uneven ground.

DuoSpan® Aluminium

DuoSpan® is a durable deck framing system ideal for a solid decking area. It provides the ultimate reassurance for a subframe with a long life. Being a universal support system for various outdoor flooring types, it is the perfect subframe choice for any project setting. An aluminium decking frame is not only low maintenance and highly corrosion-resistant, but it is also much stronger and straighter than traditional timber solutions. Similar to Plas-Pro, aluminium subframes can be used on solid surfaces or soft substrates.

What base do you need for composite decking?

The correct subframe for your decking depends on several factors. Level bases, such as concrete or existing patios, can use a pedestal system (such as DuoLift) with joists. Meanwhile, uneven ground requires a solid framework of posts and joists. Aluminium subframes, such as the DuoSpan system, provide a robust and universal support system for most applications.

What is the best decking subframe material?

The best subframe materials are ones that resist rotting, weathering, corrosion and warping and are designed to last as long as the decking on top. All of Millboard’s subframe systems will be more durable than timber alternatives, which can compromise the performance and safety of your composite decking boards.

Can I use a timber subframe for Millboard decking?

Timber subframes can be used as the framework for our composite decking, however it will not last as long so will likely fail before the decking. We would recommend our subframe solutions for a full non-rot solution, to enable a long lasting subframe to accompany the decking.
